In the Heat of the Night aired for a total of eight seasons from March 6th, 1988 to May 16th, 1995, and a run of 146 episodes. It first aired on NBC from 1988-1992 and then switched to CBS for the remainding seasons from 1992-1995. It was an American television series based on a 1967 motion picture starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger and a novel of the same name.
The plot centered around the main stars, William Gillespie and Virgil Tibbs, who traveled to Mississippi to attend Tibb's mothers funeral. He was asked to remain living there and assist in running the local police department's operations. The show dealt with various controversial issues such as racism, drug abuse, rape, murder, incest, government corruption and drunk driving, among others.
