Welcome Back Kotter was an American television sitcom that aired on ABC for four seasons from September 9, 1975 to August 10, 1979 and a total of 195 episodes each with a length of 24-25 minutes per episode.  Gabe Kaplan, the creator of this show based many of the characters from people in his past during his teen years in High School.  
 
The show centered around the title character, Gabe Kotter who was a teacher who worked in Brooklyn New York and was responsible for teaching some unruly kids known as, 'sweathogs'.  The School Principal for the most part was never involved in the education or discipline of the students.
