Pursued by East German police, who uncovered his identity, Peter Murphy, American espionage agent, wanders onto the grounds of an estate, the scene of a society party. Straying from the house, multimillionaire Mark Wainwright—Murphy’s exact double— is mistaken for Peter by the police and killed. Walking toward Wainwright, Murphy is mistaken for Mark by the Wainwright chauffeur and told of an impending meeting. Following through with the charade , he is driven to the Wainwright residence.
First meeting Peter, Eva, Marks’s beautiful wife, is unaware that he is an imposter. Attending a meeting wherein Roger Berry, Mark’s ambitious half-brother, is to assume control of Eva’s family corporation, she becomes aware of a difference when Peter refuses to sign the transfer papers. Leaving the Berry residence, Eva questions the stranger posing as her husband. Unable to reveal his true identity, he tells her about Mark and asks her to continue posing as his wife. Mystified, but needing Mark Wainwright alive to save her family corporation, she agrees.
