This medical drama series aired for five seasons on ABC from 1961 to 1966, with a total of 190 episodes.

One of the first medical dramas on television, Dr. James Kildare is a young intern working at Blair General Hospital.  The series deals with Dr. Kildare’s learning experiences as he practices medicine under the tutelage of his mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie.

Many big name personalities guest starred on the series, including Ken Berry, Leslie Nielsen, Lee Meriwether, Martin Balsam, William Shatner, Robert Reed, Diana Muldaur, Jack Nicholson, Dan O'Herlihy, Fred Astaire, Cloris Leachman, James Mason, Darren McGavin, James Earl Jones, Ricardo Montalban, Lesley Ann Warren, Suzanne Pleshette, Angie Dickinson, Jeanette Nolan, Ed Begley, George Kennedy, Carroll O'Connor, Rip Torn, Lee Marvin, Basil Rathbone.

The character of Dr. Kildare was created by author Max Brand, and before the television series had been featured in a series of ten motion pictures in the 1930’s and 1940’s, starring Joel McCrea and then Lew Ayres.  The Story of Dr. Kildare was also a radio program airing from 1950 – 1951.
