(1948 – 2004)
Created by the program’s original host, Allen Funt, Candid Camera followed Funt’s radio program, Candid Microphone, which aired from 1947 – 1948, and then again in 1950.
The television show premiered in 1948 and was basically a show about capturing people unawares on camera as different practical jokes were played on them. When the joke was revealed to the person they would be told, “Smile – You’re on Candid Camera!” The stunts
ranged from fairly simple, such as a desk where one drawer would pop open as soon as another was closed, to elaborate, such as catching people’s reactions as they saw a car being started, but only the front half actually driving away.
Over the television program’s long run, the show
aired at various times on ABC, CBS, and NBC, and later on the PAX network
. Up until 1993, the vast majority of the programs were hosted by Allen Funt, but there were also several other hosts over time, including John Bartholomew Tucker, Dorothy Collins, Dom DeLuise, Eva LaRue, Peter Funt, Suzanne
Somers, and Dina Eastwood.
Various incarnations of the program include:

The Candid Camera Show (1987 - 1988)
