The Grantland Rice Story (1955-1956)

The Grantland Rice Story

(1955-1956)

Drama / Family / News / Sports

Cast: Jimmy Powers

Grantland Rice was an early 20th century American sportswriter known for his elegant prose and vivid descriptions of sporting events.  In the world before televised sports, his articles and essays brought many a boyhood hero to life for eager young fans.  In 1955 Rice's popular "The Tumult and The Shouting" was broadcast, with the title The Grantland Rice Story.  Adapted into fifty-two sequential installments, the shows were fifteen minutes long.  The adaptation followed the text of Rice's book very faithfully, almost to the letter.  Jimmy Powers, a famous sportswriter and announcer in his own right, narrated and commented on Grantland Rice's story in a conversational manner, exactly as Rice had intended.  Powers intersperses the selections from the book with other timely updates and observations.  The series gives a fascinating insight into the career of one of the most important journalists in American history, during a time when the pen was still the king of the media.
