The American Trail (1953)

The American Trail

(1953)

Adventure / Drama / Family

Cast: Bing Crosby, General James Doolittle, President Dwight Eisenhower

This thirteen episode program is a recounting of great moments in American history.  While generally historically accurate, the information is presented in a manner that makes the bias towards patriotic fervor apparent.  Each episode seems to rise in intensity, culminating in a moving postscript in the last show from President Eisenhower.  The show was conceived and largely sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the height of their national influence.  They worked to bring the program to local youth by ensuring favorable time slots with affiliates and coordinating listening events.  The American Trail was originally broadcast in 1953 as a 13-part serial. The series chronicles American History, including the exploration and settlement of the American West.
