Pat Novak, For Hire (1946-1949)

Pat Novak, For Hire

(1946-1947, 1949)

Detective

Cast: Jack Webb, Ben Morris, Raymond Burr and Tudor Owen

A hard-boiled crime drama with an interesting twist, Pat Novak, for Hire is set in San Francisco on the waterfront .  Gritty, and focusing on the city as a dark and dangerous place where the challenge is to make it through the days and nights alive.  The title character, Pat Novak, is not a detective by trade.  He makes his living running a boat rental and repair shop down on the pier.  But he always has trouble making ends meet, and takes the odd job for extra money to get by.  The stories inevitably start with a shady or dangerous job, taken out of desperation, that leads to Pat finding himself in the same area as a recent corpse.  Police Inspector Hellman arrives, and promptly suspects Novak, who usually has very little time to clear his name by finding the real criminals, of course.  Novak's buddy, Jocko Madigan, could be trusted to supply help, and plenty of wise-cracking.

Written by Jack Webb, later famous for Dragnet , the dialogue crackles with noir and tough guy wit, with such gems as, “the neighborhood was run down.  The kind of place where the 'For Rent' signs look like ransom notes.’  Classic stuff, honed here by Pat Novak.
