The Story Lady (1945)

The Story Lady

(1945)

Comedy

Cast: Joan Gerber and Byron Kane

The Story Lady was a radio series parodying fairy tales and folk stories.  Joan Gerber was a Los Angeles comedienne and she read these twisted fairy tales in an almost completely straight manner, exactly as you would tell the story to a child at bedtime.  Byron Kane was the show 's announcer, and routinely delivered the last word with a chuckle, while providing the teaser for next week's story.  With little tricks, such as modernization, new plot twists and alternative endings, the audience could never be sure what was coming next.  Each story was quite abbreviated, most from two to six minutes in length.  Tastefully accompanied by The Magic Flute, from Mozart's Aria of Papageno, which simply adds contrast and contributes to the surreal hilarity.

Please note: Since some of the episodes are decidedly satirical and not at all the usual fairy tales they may not be suitable for listening by children.
