Francesca Johnson thought she had her whole life planned out until something happens in her life which results in her analyzing everything in her life. She encounters Robert Kincaid when he stops by the farm to ask her for directions and is all alone since her husband and children have gone to the Illinois state fair. Francesca is hesitant at first to show him around since she does not know anything about him, but corresponds to show him where the bridges are. There she finds out he works for National Geographic magazine. She begins to open up to him about her life and how she is an Italian war-bride. From there, their four-day love affair begins. After he leaves, she begins to write the pain she feels from not being with her secret lover in three journals.
