Without her knowledge, Sir Giles Staverley has gambled everything he has, including his daughter, and lost everything to Lord Harry Wrotham, and when he loses he kills himself rather than face his daughter and poverty.
Another gentleman, Lord Justin Vulcan, gambles with Wrotham for the property and the girl, and he wins. The problem is, now he doesn’t know what to do about it.
Justin installs Serene Staverley in his family home, Mandrake, where she is not particularly welcomed by Justin’s mother, Lady Harriet. Lady Harriet sets about trying to marry Serena off to anyone but her son.
As they get to know each other Justin and Serena develop a close friendship, and perhaps more…
