The lead character, Zack Mayo has joined the Navy Aviation Officer School to become a pilot but he was brought up in a Navy family and has always had a bad attitude growing up.  After joining on to this program and also beginning to have feelings for a female character, Paula he begins to re-evaluate his attitude and what direction he really wants to take his life.  With the influence Sergeant Foley and Paula have on him, despite his troubled childhood, he begins to make changes for a better future.
