Lilies of the Field tells the story of a Southern Baptist African American handyman and jack of all trades who happens upon a group of East German Catholic nuns in the Arizona desert headed by the strict Mother Superior (Mother Maria), and who believe he has been sent to them by God solely for the purpose of building them a new chapel for prayer and worship.

Sidney Poitier won the 1963 Academy Award for Best Actor, the first time an African American man won a Best Actor Oscar.
