Robert Stroud is an inmate at Leavenworth prison who has a difficult time dealing with the guards and other inmates, which results in him killing a guard. He is sentenced to be killed, but his mother convinces the authorities not to execute him, so his sentence is reduced to life in prison in a cell to himself. He becomes interested in a baby sparrow, which leads him to take a big interest in taking care of birds.
