Jack Andrus is a once-famous movie star who has spent the last three years in a sanitarium recovering from alcoholism and a nervous breakdown. When he hears from Maurice Kruger, a man who had directed some of his earlier successes, Andrus is happy to travel to Rome to be in Kruger’s latest film.
When Jack arrives in Rome he finds that the part is no longer his, but, despite Kruger’s wife’s protests, the director asks him to help with the filming, dubbing for the star of the movie, a relatively new actor named Davie Drew. Drew has difficulty with his role and that, and other things, cause the filming to be behind schedule. The increased pressure from the producer to get the film done on time and within budget contributes to Kruger being hospitalized after suffering a heart attack.
Andrus takes over the direction of the movie as a favor to Kruger and is successful in bringing the movie back on schedule. When he reports his success to Kruger in the hospital, Kruger’s wife and even Kruger himself accuse Andrus of taking advantage and trying to steal Kruger’s movie from him.
Angry and depressed, Andrus falls back into his old habits and spends the night drinking, and he and Carlotta are nearly killed in a car accident as he drunkenly drives through Rome.
