Ella Peterson works as a telephone answering service operator in Brooklyn and is always trying to make her clients feel better with information her other clients tells her. Playwright Jeffrey Moss is one of her clients.  She falls in love with him and is anxious to meet him, but he knows her as an old woman he calls mom, since she pretends to be an old woman over the phone.
