The film takes place during World War II in the Pacific, where the soldiers live a contented life with everything they need. They do not take war seriously and think it is all a game and are confident they will win. After things start to slow down, the commander orders a troop right by the enemy to see what the Japanese are up to. The troop is led by a stern and derisive sergeant who has no compassion. Things change when the lieutenant, who has had a smooth and easygoing ride, is assigned to take the sergeant’s place. This will be a huge challenge for him, for he is not accustomed to this new position.
