An inexplicable creature that looks like an enormous blob of jelly arrives on Earth from another planet. Some teenagers have seen the blob's disastrous ways and the local people ignore their comments. All along the blob's size grows and grows. 

The film is set in July of 1957, where a teenage couple Steve Andrews and Jane Martin spot a falling star. They try to find where it landed, but an old man has already found since it landed near his house. drive out to try to find where the meteor landed. He locates the meteor and nudges it with a stick. It results in it breaking open where he finds a jello blob inside. Turns out it is a creature that gets hold of the old man, leaving him to run away in pain. Steve finds the man in excruciating pain and take him to see Doctor Hallen.

They reach the doctor just in time, for he is about to leave. Dr. Hallen finds the man in bad shape and decides he must amputate his arm, while having Steve go back to the site to find more information on the blob. Now the blob has taken over the old man and feeds off the doctor and his nurse. However, the Blob completely consumes the old man. It has now gotten to a bigger size.

Steve returns just in time to see the doctor dying. They go to the authorities to explain what just has happened, yet the pleasant Lt. Dave and sarcastic Sgt. Burt find no creature when they arrive to the clinic. They decide there is nothing they can do since there is no evidence. The couple is sent home, yet later go their friends to help warn the people about the blob. While all of this is going on, more victims have fallen to the blob. It is up to Steve and his friends to stop the blob and his madness.
