This film is set in Chicago where a hotel clerk named Frank Harris (Jack Lemmon) has high aspirations of being a cowboy and gets his chance after the father of the woman he loves rejects him. He teams up with Tom Reece who accepts him as his partner because Tom lost all of his expense money playing poker the night before needing to leave town for a new cattle drive. Working out on the range is a real eye opener for Harris and he realizes it is not at all what he expected being a cowboy was about and he begins to change his mind.
