Film takes place near Gibbsville, Pennsylvania. The film shows a flashback during a funeral which is taking place for Joseph Chapin. The flashback is shown from the perspective of his daughter Ann. Viewers learn of her brother, and his dream to pursue a career as a musician. His mother Edith feels this type of job would ruin the family's reputation within their community and tries to get her son to instead be elected as lieutenant governor.
During this time, Ann is secretly married to another man, Charley Bongiorno who is a trumpet player. She becomes pregnant with his baby and later miscarries. The entire film is based on affairs that occur and the truth begins to surface.
Ann's father Joe has an affair at one point with Ann's friend and roommate, Kate Drummond. He later realizes their age difference is too much and becomes addicted to alcohol.
Later in the film, Ann is aware her friend Kate is about to marry, although she suspects her friend is still in love with another man. It is later revealed that man was indeed her father and the truth about all comes out for the viewers.
