Rockwell P. Hunter works as a writer for the advertisement of television, but is at the bottom of the spectrum for the company. He discovers the ideal model for the new lipstick line he is working for. She happens to be a famous actress with kissable lips, Rita Marlowe.

Rita will only work for Hunter’s advertisement if he poses as her boyfriend in order to make her lover, Bobo Branigansky envious of their new relationship. He also happens to the famous actor of a Tarzan show. When Bobo finds out about their relationship, he runs to the press, instantly turning Rock Hunter famous. Every woman wants to be with him and he quickly works his up at work, becoming the president of the company. Once he gets his dream job, he realizes it is not all he expected it to be and is disappointed. His company then instructs him to ask Rita to marry him live on a TV show, even though he does not want to marry her. He is already engaged to Jenny Wells, who is saddened by the proposal. Eventually she gets back with him and Rita’s old boyfriend, George Schmidlap arrives ending the fake engagement.
