This film centers on the career of singer Helen Morgan whose career lasted through the 1920's and 30's. She began singing outdoors in a carnival and then became a chorus-girl. She reached stardom on Broadway in Ziegfeld's "Show Boat". She had many failed romances, including with Larry Maddux, a gin-runner and con-man, and Russell Wade, an important New York lawyer who was married. This caused her to turn to the bottle which ended her career.
