The story opens up in a small town in Utah where David Hewson, a lawyer, discovers the body of a party girl named Marcia Morgan. David is in town visiting and Marcia is a fellow tenant at Parry Lodge where he finds her. Everyone at the lodge is considered a suspect, even the owner, Edmund Parry, who is not fond of women. Holmes begins to investigate, but another murder occurs.
