A revolutionary named John Wickliff Shawnessy becomes involved in a love affair with a rich New Orleans belle named Susanna Drake after he becomes distant with his high school sweetheart, Nell Gaither. He marries Susanna because she tricks him into thinking she is pregnant when she is not. He still remains with her after she tells him the truth, for he is in love with her. John soon discovers that Susanna is concealing something serious from him, which turns her crazy. This leads her to escape to the South during the Civil War along with their son. He joins the Northern Army in order to find her.
