A plane en route to Japan crash lands near the Japanese coast, where a young American boy is separated from everyone else.  A Japanese fisherman finds the boy and brings him back to his village, where his son becomes friends with him.  They run away together after they see the police all around town, when really they are searching for the young boy.  They both encounter many different characters throughout their journey.
