Katharine Hepburn plays Lizzie Curry who is very plain spinster woman. Although she is intelligent and skillful as a homemaker, no man wants to take a chance on her. Her life changes when Bill Starbuck played by Burt Lancaster comes into her life, and she becomes infatuated with him, after the town goes through a horrible drought and he is known as the 'Rainmaker' claiming that he can bring rain to their dry land and most of the townsfolk think he is a 'con man' just out to fleece them of their hard earned money.
