Ed Avery is a schoolteacher and family man who has one month to live due to inflammation of the arteries. He receives a treatment which works on him, but he has to take cortisone tablets often in order for his illness not to return. Problems arise when he becomes addicted to the tablets, giving him wild mood swings.
