John Robie is a scandalous but withdrawn jewel bandit dubbed 'The Cat,' who spends his time cultivating vineyards. A number of burglaries that similarly coincide with his robberies attract the authority to suspect of him and that he is back in the game. They find him to bring him to prison.

He quickly searches for protection with the group he used to work with, whom are a group of former criminals. Yet their faith in their country resulted in possibility of freedom if they behave properly. Bertani and Foussard who are the real burglars are still on the loose while the 'Cat' is still the main suspect. When the authorities go to Bertani’s restaurant, Foussard’s daughter Danielle comes to his defense. Robie's arrangement is to clear his name by getting his hands on the real thief, so he hires the help of an insurance man, H.H. Hughson, who cautiously retrieves a series of the worthiest jewels that subside on the Riviera. Robie works his magic on the first owners that are listed, which enrages Danielle.
