He tries to persuade Ben to let him know where he placed the $10,000 he robbed. The only people who know where the money is Ben's nine-year-old son, John and four-year-old daughter, Pearl. The money happens to be in Pearl’s doll and they promised their father they would never tell anyone where the money was. Once Ben is killed, Powell pretends to be a preacher to meet with Ben’s widow, Willa. She decides to marry him since he is a preacher and it is not too long when she discovers him questioning Pearl on the money. The children decide to run away, but Powell is right behind them.
