A stranger (Robert Mitchum) arrives in town in search of his estranged wife (Jan Stirling) and discovers she is in charge of the local girls. He also discovers a town and sheriff scared out of their minds, for there is a landowner they have never seen who throws rules out to the townspeople through his rebellious men. The stranger decides to help the town since he is a town tamer by trade.
