Joe Cardos is in prison for strangling three women and is scheduled to be hanged the next morning. Instead of seeing his sister or the priest during his last hours, he requests for a woman to spend the night with him, wanting to make the most of his last hours alive. They find a depressed waitress named Dora who has recently tried to commit suicide. Dora has no money and agrees to spend the night with Joe, for the money she receives from this could be enough for her own nice funeral.
