John Putnam enjoys the life he has in his new home in the Arizona desert. He comes from a background in writing and beginning to be an astronomer. Ellen Fields, a schoolteacher, is the girlfriend of John. The problem always facing him is that the town people do not trust him, especially Sheriff Matt Warren, who is very careful about Ellen. He may also be in love with her. John and Ellen are out one evening when they see a meteor come down from the sky near them. John goes to Pete to wake him up and take him to the scene of the crash. When they get to the site, John goes down into the pit with his helicopter. He is the only one to go down to see what he finds, while Ellen and Pete wait outside. John is the only one to see what is inside and it does not look pretty. When he reveals his story, everyone thinks he has gone crazy. Then the town people start to act peculiar, very unlike themselves.
