General Marcus Vinicius returns to Rome after being away for three years in the army. He encounters Lygia who is a Christian and wants nothing to do with him since he is a fighter. Even though her whole life she grew up Roman as the adopted daughter of a former general, she is still considered a prisoner of Rome. Marcus convinces the Emperor Nero to give her to him for his own services. She despises him for this, but ends up falling for him. Yet, Nero is becoming more devious as he burns Rome and points the finger at the Christians for causing the fire.
