The film is set in the 1940s in Mississippi, where Lucas Beauchamp, a black man who was known not to cater to whites, is discovered with a gun and a dead white man next to him. He is immediately thrown into jail, even though Beauchamp maintains he had nothing to do with the murder. Beauchamp requests the help of lawyer Gavin Stevens, but Stevens does not believe in him. He changes his mind when a young boy Beauchamp had helped in the past comes to him telling him to defend him, for a gang wants to lynch him. The boy believes Beauchamp is innocent.
