Vic Armstrong answers the telephone as soon as he arrives at his uncle's home. Little does he know that his uncle, a judge, has been killed and the killer is in the room with him. As soon as Vic talks to Phyllis Powers, who is on the other end of the line, Vic is struck by the killer. When Vic wakes up, he takes the knife that has killed his uncle, leaving his fingerprints all over the murder weapon. The police and Phyllis find him this way. Charlie Chan believes in the innocence of Vic and starts on the case.
