The story of French heroine Joan of Arc is brought to life with Ingrid Bergman as the star. Nicknamed the Maid of Orléans, Joan of Arc was born in 1412 and from childhood claimed to receive messages of divine inspiration to liberate France from English rule. After leading several battles and defeating the English, she was captured by the Burgundian's and handed over to the English, who proclaimed her a heretic and had her burnt at the stake at the age of 19.
Joan of Arc was originally based on the Broadway play Joan of Lorraine, which also starred Ingrid Bergman.
Joan of Arc was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won two of them, for Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography (color).
Sierra Pictures, who produced Joan of Arc, never made another picture after shooting Joan of Arc.
Joan of Arc was edited down to 100 minutes from its original 145 for its theatrical release. The original 145 minute edit was released to DVD in 2004, and was cited by critics to be greatly superior to the version released in theaters.
Director Victor Fleming died 2 months after Joan of Arc was completed.
