Mary Hagen is a small town girl who goes to Jordon Junior College in Ohio. She has no idea who her parents are and for many years people have gossiped about it. When Judge Merrivale dies, Tom Bates comes to town to replace him. The gossip starts once again when Tom returns since he has not been around for a long time and Mary starts to question if he is her father. Ken comes from a privileged background and is in love with Mary, yet he is always being told how Mary could never fit into his lifestyle. Mary is always being stimulated by her school teacher, Julia but is always having troubles in everything she does. Tom knows everything about Mary, yet is keeping it to himself.
