The film is set during 1900 in Venice, where Fenella is set to be married to Caryl Dubrok, a composer. She breaks off the engagement after she finds out that an unmarried woman by the name of Gemma is staying with a composer named Dubrok, along with a child. She leaves for the mountains where she meets Sebastian, who immediately fascinates her. It turns out he is the composer Gemma is staying with, so Gemma leaves the decision to Fenella, yet she cannot make up her mind. Gemma and Sebastian leave for England and her engagement is back on with Caryl, but she is still in love with Sebastian.
