The film revolves around the life of three World War II veterans and how their life is after the war. They all have completely different lives from the other. Al Stephenson goes back to his substantial banking job, yet it is not easy for him to accommodate his service to former veterans with new profitable jobs. Fred Derry is a regular man trying to work, yet cannot keep a job and is trying to save his marriage at the same time. Homer Parrish suffered a huge injury during the war, for his hands were severely burnt, leaving him with no hands at all. He struggles with the notion that his fiancée may not love him anymore, but only feels sorry for him. The three different servicemen return home to deal with their own problems, revealing the many different situations many American veterans faced after the war, for they viewed the world in a way they never had before.
