The film is set during World War II.  In a provincial English hospital, a postman dies during an operation.  One of the nurses declares she knows who the killer is and can prove it.  The frivolous Inspector Cockrill begins to examine each of the doctors and nurses who were present during the operation, yet four poisonous pills have vanished.
