The film is set in 1783 in London, where a prostitute encounters the painter Gainsborough by taking away his shoes.  He paints a portrait of her which is known as Anonymous Lady.  This intrigues his wealthy friends.  Sir Hugh Marcy, who is low on money, tries to pass Kitty off as a lady in order to marry her off for money.  Yet Kitty has different views on marriage.
