This film centers on an officer of the African-American 25th Regiment named Robert L. Keen who is sent on a recruitment tour all over the South and some Northern states. Rodney Tucker Jr. is from Texas and he becomes annoyed with his family when the war is brought up since he wants nothing to do with it, but his family expects him to follow in his father's footsteps since he was a good soldier like his mother claims. Rodney's fiancee, Martha Adams sings the praises of Keen when he arrives in town in search of recruits. She returns her engagement ring to Rodney after he accuses her of wanting Keen to herself and this is why she wants him to join the army. Rodney ends up joining the army which is all a learning experience to him.
