Impractical Jefferson Smith is the conductor of the Boy Rangers and is chosen as a prank by the devious governor. He joins Senator Joseph Paine, the running presidential candidate in Washington. Smith quickly realizes the many imperfections of politics when he intertwines in a dissension with Jim Taylor, the state political boss. Taylor attempts to contaminate Smith and then tries to ruin Smith with defamation.
