A young girl sells matches on the streets of New York in order to make a living for herself. She barely makes any money since it is winter and the busy crowd ignores her and is rude to her as well. Leaving the streets, she finds shelter and lights a match for warmth. It gets blown out and she falls asleep into a dream. Her dream consists of cherubs at her feet, making sure she is content and finding her a new doll and dress. They sit her on a throne. At the end, the small girl dies on the streets of New York, leaving an angel to take her soul.
