An evil Squire, who appears benevolent and is also one of the Justices of the Peace responsible for the county prison, sends an innocent man to prison in the hopes of marrying the girl he likes. She, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with him, until she is talked into marriage by her father, when she believes her lover, in Australia, has found another woman. But the Squire is a sadistic man, who enjoys mistreating his 'children' as he calls the inmates.
Deplorable prison conditions during the 1850's England create quite a ruccous and caused Queen Victoria to demand an investigation into prison cruelty which brought about the reforms we see today~
