Marihuana
(1937)
65 minutes.
Exploitation / Teen Rebels
Directed by Elmer Clifton
Cast: Luana Walters, Arthur Gardner and Fay McKenzie
Also titled, “Assassin of Youth ".
Blonde bombshell, Fay McKenzie, steals the picture from the others as the evil, conniving, immoral Jezebel who heads a marijuana ring. Fay is a really delightful minx who doesn't try to gain any sympathy as she leads brainless bimbo Luana Walters down the paths of unrighteousness. Everyone seems to pick on poor Luana. She's the heiress to a small fortune, but only if she comports herself in a clean and moral way.
Then there's another sub-story of a reporter who infiltrates this drug-crazed group of swingers and wouldn't you know it, but he also gets Luana into deep trouble.
Dwain Esper returned to what he does best, making a cautionary tale about the dangers of drug abuse. This time his wife wrote and he directed Marihuana. This film is about a young girl who slowly becomes a dope pusher. Taglined, “See the truth about the smoke from Hell!”, “Weird orgies! Wild parties! Unleashed passions!” and “A Puff–A Party–A Tragedy” After watching this, you’ll never think about smoking that weed.
