Schoolteacher Mary Evans moves into a small town in Indiana. She encounters student Shockey Carter, who is very aggressive, and takes an interest in him. She learns that he and his shell-shocked war veteran father live in poverty, so she offers to help them. A big benefit is held at the school, and at the party, Shockey learns how to stand up for himself without violence.
