After the spread of the telegraph ends the Pony Express, horsemen John Blair and Larry Adams go into business creating a stagecoach line. In Buchanan City, the duo first tries to buy a coach , but is offered a franchise in Cal Drake's new line to Crescent City.
Once the duo arrives in Crescent City, they realize that they have been swindled into buying a line to a town of only three people. However, the mayor has a plan for the team to actually make money and help Crescent City grow. There is a government grant for $25,000 to help deliver mail to the area. The telegraph team that Blair and Adams help save, who are willing to build a station in Crescent City as thanks, doesn't hurt either.
Drake isn't happy seeing the duo succeed in spite of his plans, and begins to set up ways to ensure the heroic duo meet a dastardly end.
The original print of this film included a dedication to "unsung heroes of the Old West who gave their lives to bring the thin strands of communication across the trackless wastes of the great American Desert, braving the perils of the trail, that the telegraph wires might follow Pony Express and unite the new cities of the West with the Nation's Capitol".
Winds of the Wasteland was shot on location in the Sacramento Valley and in the Sierra Mountains.
