This was Chaplin's last silent film. Charlie is not fond of how society is changing and progressing. He is not accustomed to the new machines being used and is having a hard time keeping up with the new changes, which leads him to the mental hospital after he undergoes an experiment. After he is released from the hospital, he goes to jail for waving a red flag, which makes him look like a communist.
