Moulton is after Jim Thornton's gold. Fleeing with the gold, Thornton gets the drop on Lucky. He switches hats, but falls to his death trying to switch horses. Later Moulton sees Lucky wearing Thornton's hat and tries to pin Thornton's murder on him. Lucky is acquitted but Moulton knows he has the gold and his gang goes after him.
